Bulgaria, Romania seek EU financing for Danube Bridge repairs

Bulgaria and Romania would jointly seek funding from the European Union for the modernisation and rehabilitation of the only bridge across the Danube River between the two countries, website stroitelstvo.bg reported, quoting participants in a commission of experts overseeing the bridge’s maintenance.

This bridge linking Rousse on the Bulgarian side to Giurgiu in Romania is the only one in this part of Europe, making it an important part of the EU transport infrastructure in South-Eastern Europe. …

One in three cargo ships carrying hazardous materials

Hungarian water authorities and partner organizations launched 170 proceedings against operators of ships carrying dangerous and illegal materials along the Danube during a recent one-week raid, reports atv.hu.

Every third ship is transporting hazardous materials, and an accident on the river upstream of Budapest could put the safety of drinking water in the city at risk. Some of these ships carry diesel oil or gasoline, others materials that are explosive when they come into contact with water.

During the checks, 37,000 liters of diesel oil and the ship carrying it were seized, said Lt. Col. Zoltán Tóth of the Danube Water Police. Another raid involved a document counterfeiting gang.
