New York State Budget Woes Will Impact the Hudson River

NEW PALTZ - The state Department of Environmental Conservation has myriad plans to improve the health of and accessibility to the Hudson River but practically zero dollars to execute those plans.

Hudson River advocates are facing that grim financial reality as they tour the valley with their five-year action agenda. They’ll share details of the plan and take public comment at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Newburgh Free Library.

“This plan sets forth a vision that leverages many more millions of dollars than what we have in the budget,” said Fran Dunwell, coordinator of the state’s Hudson River Estuary Program.

The program and its public partners had been doling out millions of dollars each year for new docks, sewage treatment improvements and other projects that improved the health of the Hudson River and access to the waterfront.

Now, that money’s drying up.
