CITY OF NEWBURGH - Commuters predicted two weeks ago that ice would ground the Newburgh-Beacon ferry any day now - and Monday was any day.
NY Waterway, which operates the service for Metro-North Railroad, switched to buses Monday after being unable to navigate the ice-choked Hudson. The ferry has been operating on a reduced schedule since Jan. 4 to give crews ample turnaround time between the Newburgh waterfront and the Beacon train station.
One commuter reported ice conditions have been so severe around the Beacon dock for the past two weeks that captains had to make the equivalent of an eight-point turn to return to Newburgh.
Commuters should review the bus schedule carefully at www.mta.info
or www.nywaterway.com and be aware that ferry service — and different connecting times — could resume with little notice.
